LGBTQ+ Contributions in Computing

CMDiT graphic with rainbow accents reads: "Celebrating LGBTQ+ contributions in computing and technology. Empowering, Inspiring, and Innovating.

June provides an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community whose work continues to shape computing. Across research institutions, startups, nonprofit organizations, and global enterprises, the LGBTQ+ community has helped drive advancements in many areas, including software engineering, artificial intelligence, data systems, workforce development, and community-building while expanding visibility and representation throughout the tech landscape.

CMD-IT recognizes the importance of fostering inclusive pathways that support students, researchers, and professionals across the computing community. Through initiatives such as the Tapia Conference and Student Professional Development Workshops, CMD-IT works to strengthen connections, expand access to opportunity, and support long-term success in computing and technology fields. These efforts contribute to a broader goal of cultivating innovation through diverse perspectives and experiences.

In recognition of Pride Month, CMD-IT highlights three contributions that have meaningfully influenced computing, technology infrastructure, and access to opportunity in the tech ecosystem.

R. Martin Chavez

R. Martin Chavez’s contributions to the technology ecosystem focus on advancing large-scale computing systems and modernizing financial infrastructure through software engineering and data-driven design. As the former Chief Information Officer at Goldman Sachs, he helped transform core trading and financial operations into scalable, software-based platforms, strengthening the role of engineering, automation, and analytics in enterprise finance.

His leadership supported the broader evolution of financial services into a technology-centric industry, where computing systems underpin trading, risk management, and global operations. He also contributed to cultural and organizational shifts within major financial institutions during a period of growing emphasis on engineering talent and digital transformation.

Chavez is also recognized for his role in increasing LGBTQ+ visibility in senior leadership across technology and finance, especially in his CIO position with Goldman Sachs.. His career reflects both the technical modernization of global finance and the gradual expansion of representation within executive leadership.
